The best battery lawn mowers in Australia

Quick answer: For most Australian backyards the best battery lawn mower is the Ryobi 36V HP Brushless 46cm kit, $499 at Bunnings with battery and charger. On a tight budget, the Ozito PXC 36V 410mm kit is $228 with two batteries. If you already own Makita or Bosch 18V tools, buy into the platform you have: the Makita DLM432CT2 kit ($762.38 at Bunnings) or the Bosch Rotak 18V2-43 kit on Amazon.

Price at the retailer

Price at the retailer named, checked 18 October 2026. Prices change, so the retailer's page is the final word. We can't show Amazon prices here; the Amazon button shows today's price. Paid links: we may earn a commission. The highlighted pick is the one we'd buy for most people.

How we picked: We compared these 8 picks on deck width, battery, catcher and price, using maker specs, Australian retailer prices and owner reports. We haven't tested them hands-on yet, and maker claims are labelled as theirs. Commission never changes the order. Full method.

A battery lawn mower is the simplest upgrade from petrol: no fuel, no pull cord, no servicing, and it hangs on a shed wall. The choice in Australia is wide because every power tool brand sells one, and the mower you should buy often depends less on the mower than on the batteries you already own. Prices below are from Bunnings and Mower Supastore on 18 October 2026; for the models sold on Amazon Australia, check the current price on Amazon. We compared maker specifications and retailer listings; we have not mowed with these ourselves. Ryobi and Ozito are sold only at Bunnings, so this site earns nothing from them; they are here because for many lawns they are the honest pick.

Start with the battery platform

Battery mowers run on the same packs as each brand’s drills, trimmers and blowers. If you already own one brand’s tools, its mower kit, or even its “skin only” mower with no battery, is usually the cheapest way in. If you own none, pick the platform with the garden tools you will want next.

Platform Mower here Battery in the kit Where

Greenworks 40V 40V Brushless 46cm One 40V 4.0Ah Amazon
Stanley FatMax V20 V20 2x18V 51cm Two 18V 4.0Ah Amazon

Ryobi’s 36V and 18V ONE+ batteries are separate systems, and Bunnings says the 36V battery runs Ryobi’s 36V garden range. Mower Supastore stocks Greenworks’ 60V range rather than the 40V one; its 60V 46cm mower and trimmer bundle was $799.

Deck width and lawn size

A wider deck means fewer passes; a bigger battery means you finish before it runs flat. As a rough guide, a 32 to 37 cm deck suits a small courtyard lawn, 41 to 46 cm a typical suburban backyard, and 51 cm a big block. Maker area ratings give a better steer than deck width: Ozito says 500 m² for the 410 mm kit on its two batteries, Greenworks 650 m² on a 4Ah battery, Stanley up to 750 m² for the FatMax V20, and Toro up to 300 m² for its 43 cm 60V mower ($844.98 at Bunnings).

Check the catcher and the cutting heights too. The catchers here run from 31 L (Bosch EasyMower) to 50 L (Ozito, Makita, Bosch Rotak, Greenworks). If you keep buffalo or kikuyu long through summer, look at the top of the cutting range: 80 mm on the Ryobi 36V, 76 mm on the Greenworks, 75 mm on the Ozito, Makita and Bosch Rotak, and only 60 mm on the Bosch EasyMower.

The picks

The Ryobi 36V HP Brushless 46cm kit is the one we would buy for a typical backyard. For $499 at Bunnings you get a 46 cm deck, a 36V 4.0Ah battery and a charger, a 45 L catcher and five heights from 20 to 80 mm. Bunnings says its adaptive blade speed slows on thin grass to save battery and speeds up on thick patches, with a turbo mode. It is a push mower, not self-propelled.

The Ozito PXC 36V 410mm kit is remarkable value at $228: a brushless motor, two 18V 4.0Ah batteries and a dual charger, a 50 L catcher and six heights from 25 to 75 mm. It has a plastic deck; Ozito’s steel-deck 460 mm kit (PXBMK-4047) is $479. Ozito says its tools are intended for DIY use only.

On Amazon Australia, the Bosch Rotak 18V2-43 kit is the pick: brushless, 43 cm, two 18V 4.0Ah batteries, a 50 L bag and a mulch plug, with Bosch’s Power for All batteries shared across several brands. The Greenworks 40V 46cm kit suits a bigger lawn on one battery, rated for 650 m² on its 4Ah pack, though it weighs 21 kg before the battery goes in. The Stanley FatMax V20 51cm kit has the widest deck here and two batteries, but its 40 L catcher is small for the width.

If you are already on a platform, stay there. The Makita DLM432CT2 ($762.38 at Bunnings) comes with two 5.0Ah LXT batteries and 13 height positions; Makita’s smaller 18V 330 mm kit (DLM330SM) is $329. The Ryobi 18V ONE+ 37cm HP kit ($399) runs on the ONE+ batteries many sheds already have and carries a second battery on board. For a small, sloping or terraced lawn, the Bosch EasyMower 18V-32-200 weighs 8.1 kg with its battery; robots on slopes are covered in the robot mower for slopes guide.

If you would rather not push a mower at all, the robot lawn mower guide starts at $899, and the budget robot guide covers everything under $1,500.

Safety

Every mower here has a spinning blade. Read the maker’s starting procedure: the Ozito uses a full-handle lever switch with a safety start button, and the Greenworks has a security starter key. Remove the battery or safety key before you clear the deck or carry the mower, keep children and pets away while mowing, and store batteries as the maker says. Chargers plug into mains power, so check for the RCM mark.

What to avoid

Buying a “skin only” or “tool only” mower by mistake. Many listings sell the mower without a battery or charger, at a price that looks like a bargain next to a kit. On the day we checked, Bunnings listed a Ryobi 18V ONE+ HP 37cm mower as “Tool Only” and a Makita 18V x 2 380 mm mower as “Skin Only”, and Amazon had a Bosch Rotak 18V-32 “without battery”. Those make sense only if you already own the batteries. If you do not, compare kit prices, and for a 2 x 18V mower make sure the kit includes two batteries, not one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best battery lawn mower in Australia?

For most backyards, the Ryobi 36V HP Brushless 46cm kit at $499 from Bunnings: a wide deck, a 36V battery and charger in the box and a 45 L catcher. The Ozito PXC 36V 410mm kit at $228 is the budget pick.

Are battery lawn mowers as good as petrol?

For a typical suburban lawn, a modern brushless battery mower cuts well and starts at the push of a button, with no fuel or servicing. For very large blocks, long grass or commercial use, a petrol mower or a bigger battery platform still has the edge on run time.

How big a lawn can a battery mower handle?

It depends on the battery, not just the mower. Ozito rates its 410 mm kit for 500 m² on the two included batteries, Greenworks says 650 m² on its 4Ah battery, and Stanley rates the FatMax V20 51 cm for gardens up to 750 m². A second battery doubles that.

Do Ryobi and Ozito battery mowers work with other brands' batteries?

No. Each brand uses its own battery platform, and Ryobi's 36V and 18V ONE+ batteries are separate systems too. Ozito and Ryobi are sold only at Bunnings, so the batteries and mowers come from the same place.

Should I buy a battery mower or a robot mower?

A battery mower costs $228 to $762 and you push it once a week. A robot costs $899 and up and mows on its own. If you enjoy mowing or have a small lawn, buy the battery mower. If you would rather never mow, see our robot mower guide.
